Folkflora

A note before we begin

Folkflora explores the folklore, history, and traditional uses of plants and natural remedies — the stories our ancestors told about what grew around them and how they used it. This is a project rooted in curiosity, culture, and craft, not clinical practice.

I’m not a doctor, medical herbalist, or healthcare professional, and nothing on this website is medical advice. When I write about how a plant or remedy has traditionally been used, I’m sharing folklore and popular history — not a recommendation for you to use it yourself, and not a substitute for advice from a qualified GP, pharmacist, or medical herbalist. Please don’t start, stop, or change any medication, supplement, or treatment based on anything you read here. If you’re pregnant, nursing, unwell, or taking medication, please check with a healthcare professional before trying anything mentioned in these pages — some plants that sound gentle and old-fashioned can interact with medicines or aren’t safe for everyone. If you’re ever in a medical emergency, please contact emergency services like NHS 111, not a web page.

Hi there,

Behind this screen, my name is Lorena (or Loris). I’m originally from Brasil but live in the UK. I work in communications, and in my free time I’m a part-time fairy and a hippie (very woo-woo with touches of whimsy).

I am also a crochet and fibre artist. And I am studying naturopathy and herbalism - and I am certified in auriculotherapy, or ear seeding.

Folkflora started as my Instagram page, where I once in a while posted some crochet pieces I was either working on or were fresh out of the hook.

The idea now is that I’m getting deeper into naturopathy, holistic health, herbalism and everything else that comes with it, and with my even deeper appreciation for the fibre artists out there, making magic with literally thread and stick (and other tools), to have a space - a project - where I can share everything I’m learning.

Or as I wrote down at some point, to summarise, “Folkflora is a media project exploring nature, folk wisdom, creativity, and meaningful living through a feminine lens.” It sounds good now; let’s hope it ages like wine, and not milk.

It’s always worth remembering: this is a safe space; hate of any kind won’t be tolerated ☮︎

Thanks for coming into this journey with me.

Loris
